If you're relocating to Northern Virginia and want a neighborhood where the weekends mostly plan themselves, living in West Springfield VA deserves a close look. This post is for buyers moving into Fairfax County who want trails, parks, and a real commute option, and who would rather spend the first year after a move enjoying the area than renovating a house. West Springfield sits right next to Burke, and as a Northern Virginia relocation specialist, I think it's one of the most practical places in the county to land.
When I asked the sellers of 7111 Tanworth Drive for their favorite things about living here, their community list didn't start with shopping or the commute. It started with the trails.
What Does a Week in Springfield VA Actually Look Like?
Choosing a neighborhood from a distance is really choosing a routine. Here's what that routine looks like from Tanworth Drive.
Weekday mornings. Franconia-Springfield station is the end of the Blue Line, so you board where the train starts, with VRE's Fredericksburg Line at the same station. Burke's Rolling Road station on VRE's Manassas Line is another option.
Weeknight errands. Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Costco, and Aldi are all nearby, so the weekly shopping doesn't take over a Saturday. Springfield Town Center covers the rest, and when nobody wants to cook, there's a Chick-fil-A close by.
Saturday mornings. Walking and biking trails run through the neighborhood, and South Run Park connects to Burke Lake by paved trail. It's the kind of long walk or ride you'll start taking every weekend.
Summer afternoons. Village West Pool has been part of the community since 1967, with a swim team, a covered pavilion, and grills ready for cookouts.
Spring. Cherry Blossom trees bloom throughout the neighborhood every spring, and you won't need to fight the Tidal Basin crowds to see them.

Where Are the Trails, Parks, and Pool Near West Springfield VA?
This is where the sellers' list gets specific, and where West Springfield stands out from other parts of Northern Virginia at this price point.
- South Run Park. This 192-acre Fairfax County district park includes the South Run RECenter, with indoor pools and a fitness center. The paved South Run Stream Valley Trail runs about four miles from the park to the Burke Lake dam, where the 4.6-mile loop around Burke Lake begins.
- Wakefield Park. This 292-acre park in Annandale is home to the Audrey Moore RECenter, the Wakefield Skate Park, a well-known mountain bike trail network, and a stretch of the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail.
- Franconia Park. Another Fairfax County park within easy reach, which gives you a third option when you want a change of scenery.
- Village West Pool. Village West Pool is a membership-based, volunteer-led community pool with a lap lane, a diving well, a slide, and the Village West Vikings swim team. It's open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Libraries. Pohick Regional Library and Richard Byrd Library, both part of Fairfax County Public Library, are close to home.
Playgrounds are a short walk from the house, and several daycares and preschools are located nearby, which matters if you're setting up childcare before your start date.
What's Inside 7111 Tanworth Drive?
This is an updated three-bedroom, 3.5-bath townhome with a one-car garage and three finished levels. Here's how it lives, room by room.
The main level. High ceilings, large windows, and hardwood flooring installed in 2020 set the tone. Modern recessed lighting runs throughout, and new light fixtures were added on the main floor and stairwell in 2025.
The kitchen. It's large enough to cook, gather, and host at the same time, with a 2024 refrigerator and dishwasher. From here, you step out to the deck.
The deck and backyard. The deck was refurbished in 2023 and is sized for entertaining. Its stairs lead straight down to a fully fenced backyard.
The primary suite. A cathedral ceiling and large windows look out onto the crepe myrtles. The walk-in closet was fitted with a custom Elfa shelving system in 2024, and the remodeled bath has a spacious soaking tub, a double vanity, and a separate water closet.
The rest of the upper level. Two more bedrooms, both with high ceilings, share a full hall bath.
The lower level. The finished walkout level has a gas fireplace, a full bath, laundry, and a door straight out to the yard. It works as a media room, an office, or a place for overnight guests.
Parking and storage. The attached garage has extra storage space, with a driveway and shared guest parking steps from the front door.

How Easy Is the Commute From West Springfield VA?
You have more options than most Fairfax County neighborhoods, and that flexibility matters when your work location could change after you arrive.
- Metro. Franconia-Springfield is the southern end of the Blue Line, which runs through Alexandria and Arlington, including a stop at the Pentagon, and into Washington, D.C.
- VRE Fredericksburg Line. The same station is a stop on VRE's Fredericksburg Line, with service toward Alexandria, Crystal City, and Union Station.
- VRE Manassas Line. The Rolling Road station in Burke is on the Manassas Line, another route toward Crystal City and downtown.
- Driving. Franconia-Springfield station sits near I-95 just outside the Capital Beltway, and the Fairfax County Parkway runs nearby.
One honest note: the right commute depends on exactly where you're going and when. Before you commit to any home, test the drive and the train at the times you'll actually travel. It's one of the first things I map out with relocating clients.
Is West Springfield a Good Fit If You're Relocating to Northern Virginia?
I moved five times in 15 years as a trailing spouse, including three years in Thailand, so I know how much a new routine matters in the first few months. West Springfield tends to fit buyers who want:
- Trails and parks they can use every weekend without planning a trip
- Transit options across Metro and two VRE lines
- Everyday convenience, with groceries, shopping, and libraries close by
- A move-in-ready home, so the first year isn't spent on projects
- A manageable size that's easier to hold if a future assignment takes them out of the area
If your time here might be shorter than you'd like, it's worth running the numbers before you default to renting. Here's why buying can beat renting even on a one-year timeline.
